SOPHIA HOUSE Arlington:
(A discernment community for women considering religious
life)

On October 6, 2004, the US Province of the Religious of
Jesus and Mary opened SOPHIA HOUSE, in Arlington,
Massachusetts. It will serve as a community setting for
six women, with a focus on discernment about a vocation
to religious life in the Church. Opportunities will be
provided for shared prayer and reflection, hospitality
and concern for the poor. Members are responsible for
all facets of community living, while they engage in
work, ministry or study. Commitment for one or two years
is preferred. Two RJM form the core members of the

JESUS MARY MISSION CENTER, PLAINVILLE:
(Retirement center for 18 senior sisters)

One RJM, comes, two days each week, to help with the
driving. Several lay people help with daily living
activities, laundry, cooking, cleaning. A registered
nurse sees to the sisters’ medical needs. A social
psychologist meets with the group and individuals every
week.
St. Martha’s Parish daily Mass is celebrated in the
chapel. Parishioners stay on for coffee, which provides
an opportunity for listening and sharing. Some sisters
serve as cantors, lectors, choir members, etc. in the
parish.
On the same campus, a small facility, leased to the Pine
Street Inn (Celeste House) provides help to women and
their children recovering from drugs and/or alcohol
abuse. As the women near completion of their
rehabilitation program, they help in the kitchen,
laundry, etc.
Another small facility consists of two large classrooms
leased to Hillcrest Academy. Some sisters volunteer
their service, get to know the children and attend their
productions at various times during the school year.
The sisters help with various chores: administration,
bookkeeping and maintenance, driving, kitchen chores,
organizing outings, parties, and days of prayer.

Eight sisters live in a facility run by the Sisters of
Charity of Halifax. It provides spiritual, social, and
cultural supports for their needs. An RJM from
Plainville maintains contact and sees to personal and
RJM community needs.
